Job Description: Biodiversity Monitor

Location: Khobab & Loeriesfontein 2 Wind Farms, Loeriesfontein, 8185

The primary responsibility of this role is to conduct operational bird and bat monitoring at the wind facility as mentioned above. The program is inclusive of bird and bat monitoring, carcass searches, searcher efficiency trails and carcass persistence trails, adhering to standardized protocols as trained, being part of a small field crew and keeping detailed datasheets and observations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Senior Certificate (or NQF equivalent) and/or higher education would be preferred.

  • Must read, write and speak English fluently (Afrikaans and other languages will be an advantage).

  • Must have the basic knowledge on how to operate a camera and GPS.

  • Must be mentally and physically fit, and in good health.

  • Must be able to walk long distances in rough terrain, in all weather conditions.

  • Hard worker and honesty are a prerequisite.

 

THE FOLLOWING WILL SERVE AS AN ADVANTAGE:

  • Firefighting Certificate

  • First-Aid Certificate

  • A valid Driver’s License

  • Computer literate (MS Excel & Word)

 

JOB DESCRIPTION OF A BIODIVERSITY MONITOR:

  • Biodiversity Monitors will search in a set area under each turbine for dead/injured birds & bats, or any other duties required for operations.

The program is inclusive of bird and bat monitoring, carcass searches, searcher efficiency trails and carcass persistence trails, adhering to standardized protocols as trained, being part of a small field crew and keeping detailed datasheets and observations.

  • Senior Certificate (or NQF equivalent) and/or higher education would be preferred.

  • Must be fully Computer literate.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word).

  • Must read, write and speak English fluently (Afrikaans and other languages will be an advantage).

  • Must have the basic knowledge on how to operate a camera and GPS.

  • Must be a natural team leader.

  • Must be good with paperwork. Neatness is a prerequisite and punctuality with work is of utter importance.

  • Must be mentally and physically fit and in good health.

  • Hard worker and honesty are a prerequisite.

  • The following will serve as an advantage:

  • Firefighting Certificate

  • First-Aid Certificate

  • A valid Driver’s License

 

BIODIVERSITY SUPERVISOR JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

DAILY:

  • Clocking of staff;

  • Daily HSE meetings;

  • Daily task planning;

  • Daily PPE inspections;

  • Do risk assessment;

  • Daily toolbox talks;

  • Reviewing of Baseline risk assessment;

  • Reach daily targets;

  • Implement the Occupational Health and Safety Act(OHS).

 

WEEKLY:

  • Make sure that weekly targets are met;

  • Sending of weekly report;

  • Check GPS tracks;

  • Check that no damages occurs to property;

  • Uploading of weekly data;

  • Health and Safety file inspections and upkeep.

 

MONTHLY:

  • Monthly SHEQ meetings;

  • Monthly searcher efficiency trails.
